2-Link vs. 4-Link Suspension: Which Is Better for an Air Ride Truck?

When you’re converting a leaf-spring truck to air suspension, one of the biggest rear-suspension decisions is whether to run a 2-link or a 4-link. Both can work, but they solve the problem differently.

For the majority of EKMW-style street truck builds, we recommend starting with a 2-link. It is simple, strong, compact, and works extremely well on trucks that are being built to cruise low, lay out, and remain straightforward to service.

What is a 2-link suspension?

A 2-link uses two large trailing links to locate the rear axle front-to-back. On many EKMW truck applications, those links use the factory leaf-spring hanger area as a mounting point and work together with a panhard bar to control side-to-side axle movement.

EKMW 2-link bars can also incorporate lower bag mounts and shock mounts, which keeps the rear suspension package clean and reduces the number of separate brackets that need to be fabricated.

Why EKMW recommends 2-link for most street truck builds

  • Simple packaging: fewer bars and brackets than a traditional universal 4-link
  • Clean installation: works well with factory leaf-spring hanger locations on many truck chassis

What does a complete 2-link rear setup usually need?

A proper rear air suspension is more than just the two bars. Depending on the chassis and kit, the full system commonly includes:

  • 2-link bars
  • Step notch
  • Upper and lower bag mounts
  • Upper and lower shock mounts
  • Panhard bar and mounts
  • U-bolts or axle mounting hardware
  • Air bags

That is why EKMW vehicle-specific rear kits are often the easiest route: the major components are designed to work together instead of requiring you to piece together universal parts.

What is a 4-link suspension?

A 4-link uses four separate links to locate the rear axle. It can provide more freedom to tune suspension geometry, pinion-angle behavior, anti-squat characteristics, and axle movement.

That flexibility is useful on highly custom builds, performance-oriented vehicles, or projects where the installer wants to design the suspension geometry from scratch.

Why not automatically choose a 4-link?

More links do not automatically make the suspension better for every truck. A universal 4-link requires careful bracket placement and suspension geometry. The installer needs to establish link angles, instant center, pinion behavior, axle position, bag placement, shock placement, and lateral axle control.

For a truck that is mainly being built to cruise, lay frame, and drive comfortably, that extra complexity may not provide much real-world benefit over a properly designed 2-link.

2-link vs. 4-link: which should you choose?

Choose a 2-link if:

  • You’re building a street-driven lowered truck
  • You want a proven air-ride layout with fewer components
  • You want to use an EKMW vehicle-specific rear kit
  • You want simpler fabrication and easier packaging
  • You want link-mounted bag or shock options

Consider a 4-link if:

  • You’re designing a fully custom chassis or rear suspension from scratch
  • You need more control over suspension geometry for a specialized build
  • You’re comfortable calculating and fabricating link geometry
  • The vehicle application does not package well with a 2-link
