Front Cups vs. Control Arms: Which Air Suspension Setup Do You Need?
When you’re bagging a truck, one of the biggest front-suspension decisions is whether to use a traditional cup-style air-bag setup or move to a dedicated control-arm system. Both can work well, but they are built for different wheel sizes, alignment needs, and fabrication goals.
EKMW offers both styles across several Chevy and GMC truck platforms, including C10, OBS, and 1999–2006 Silverado/Sierra applications.
What is a front cup kit?
A cup kit replaces the front coil spring with an air bag using an upper mounting plate and a lower cup that positions the bag correctly on the factory-style suspension.
Depending on the chassis, a cup kit may also include shock relocators and other mounting hardware.

- Works well when the factory suspension geometry still fits the build
- Often requires the correct drop spindle or spindle setup for the chassis
What is a control-arm air suspension kit?
A dedicated control-arm kit replaces more of the factory front suspension with components designed specifically around a lowered air-ride setup.
- Better suited to larger wheel-and-tire combinations
- Can provide additional wheel and tire clearance
- Can improve alignment range on heavily lowered trucks
- May narrow front track width for additional fender clearance
- Can incorporate steering-geometry corrections on applications that need them
When should you choose cups?
Cups are usually the best choice when you want a simpler front air-suspension conversion, you are staying with a smaller wheel-and-tire package, and the factory control-arm geometry still works for your desired stance.
1973–1987 Chevy C10
On C10 applications, the basic EKMW cup setup is designed around a 3-inch drop spindle and is intended to lay the frame on approximately 20-inch wheels when installed as intended.
1988–1998 Chevy / GMC OBS
The OBS front cup system is designed to work with factory control arms and drop spindles. It is intended for builds running up to approximately 22-inch wheels. Larger than 18-inch wheels may require additional frame clearance for the tie-rod end.
1999–2006 Silverado / Sierra
The 1999–2006 cup system uses an upper bag plate, angled lower cup, and shock-relocation hardware. It is intended for smaller-wheel builds using factory control arms. Because spindle requirements can vary by complete-kit configuration, confirm the exact front setup for your truck before ordering.

When should you choose control arms?
Control arms make more sense when the build is moving beyond the limits of the factory-style front suspension. That usually means larger wheels, tighter fender clearance, heavier lowering, or the need for additional alignment and steering correction.
1973–1987 Chevy C10
The EKMW C10 upper-control-arm package adds adjustable upper control arms, ball joints, a mounting plate, lower cup, upper bag plate, and shocks. This gives the front end more alignment adjustment than the basic cup-only setup.

1988–1998 Chevy / GMC OBS
The OBS control-arm kit is designed for approximately 22–26-inch wheel combinations and narrows the front track width about 1 inch per side. Drop spindles are required.

1999–2006 Silverado / Sierra 1500
The EKMW 1999–2006 front control-arm system is designed for 2WD Silverado and Sierra 1500 trucks. It includes upper and lower control arms, MOOG ball joints, bag and shock mounting components, upper-arm relocation tabs, and a steering adapter.
The control arms narrow the front track width approximately 1 inch per side and are intended for larger-wheel air-suspension builds. Factory spindles are required and must be modified for the EKMW ball-joint and steering setup.

Cups vs. control arms: quick comparison
- Cups: simpler, lower-cost, factory-control-arm based, best for moderate wheel sizes
- Control arms: more complete geometry solution, better for larger wheels and tighter clearance
- Cups: usually require fewer front suspension changes
- Control arms: can improve alignment range, track width, and steering geometry depending on chassis
Don’t choose by wheel diameter alone
Wheel diameter is only part of the decision. Tire height, wheel width, offset/backspacing, spindle choice, ride height, frame modifications, and desired laid-out position all affect whether a cup or control-arm setup is appropriate.
Before ordering, confirm your chassis, 2WD/4WD configuration, wheel and tire measurements, spindle setup, and final stance goals.
